PBL District Gifted Program
The gifted program at PBL provides students experiences that challenge
higher order thinking skills by participating in activities suited to
their aptitude in a given area. Students who are identified for the
program work with their building principal, teacher, and parents on
agreed upon individual and group projects during the school year that
go above and beyond the regular classroom setting. Students participating
in the program maintain a portfolio as part of the evaluation process,
as well as product evaluations and parent/teacher/student conferences.
Teachers who choose to participate in the gifted program are provided
stipends to attend staff development opportunities that will update
them in their area of expertise and interest. Time is also set aside
for the staff to plan activities for the year and funds are provided
for the purchase of supplies, equipment, and materials.
One area that has experienced a great deal of success, due to the
gifted program, is our math program. Students participate in the highly
acclaimed Mathmatica program at the high school under the guidance of
Mrs. Sandy Emerick. The PBL Math team, which is comprised of many of
these students, has proudly represented the district by winning the
Regional Math Team competition for 9 consecutive years and placing high
at the state level, with many individuals capturing state honors.
