Athletic Directors Minutes December 13, 2006

1.  A Discussion was held on the Girl’s Basketball Tourney.  A timeline is online for schools to get information to John Overstreet.  The Brackets/pairings also are online and will be updated Wednesday December 20th.

2.  A Discussion was held on the Boy’s Basketball Tourney. A timeline is online for schools to get information to John Overstreet.  The Brackets/pairings also are online and will be updated Wednesday January 24th.

3.  A Discussion was held on Scholastic Bowl.

4.  Watseka was selected as the site for the 2007 track meet.  The meet will be held on Tuesday May 8 beginning at noon with field events, 1:00 prelims and finals will follow.  There will be a required coach’s meeting at 11:15 am.

5.  A Discussion of the IHSA policy that allows the filming of games by non competing schools was held.  It is the unanimous recommendation of the Athletic Directors not to allow this.  It is the belief that schools own the rights to game at their location and can prevent filming by individuals or schools who are not related to the schools playing that night.  A formal by-law will be presented to the Principals at the February 2007 meeting.

6.  A Discussion was held on prelim football games on Friday night before the varsity game and the effect on timetables, length of the night and the ability to get officials to do the games.  Other considerations to as why games were moved to Friday was to allow for one less night set up and workers and supervision.

The Athletic Directors will survey their coaches to get feedback on the issue.  The options are to keep the by-laws as is—play the game on Friday night unless moved by mutual consent or change the by-law to play the game on Thursday night unless moved by mutual consent.

The other issue discussed was the site of the sophomore game on Monday night.  The current by-law plays the game at the same site of the varsity game.   This was done due to using less paint and confusion of where games were.  The question was raised at the meeting of the wear and tear on fields if you played 2 games on Friday then JFL on Saturday and another one on Monday.  Athletic Directors will also survey their coaches and administrator on this question.

7.  A review of future 2008-09 and 2009-10 dates and schedules was held.  A few dates were added to the original list.  Schedules for those years will be developed between now and the February 2007 meeting.

The idea discussed to move the volleyball tournament to just Thursday and Saturday will not work due to the play in games—see 2006 brackets matches 1, 3 and 6.

A brief discussion was held on the possibility of hiring an assignor for SVC basketball games.  There was no interest in doing this due to the differences in hiring of officials by schools.

8.  A Discussion “sophomore” games versus “junior varsity” games was held—see current sample bylaw.  This discussion was held concerning volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball.  The options are to leave as is and not allow juniors to play in the prelim games, allow juniors to play upon mutual consent, to allow a certain number of juniors or to allow as many juniors as a school wants to play.  Please survey your coaches and administrators.  This will be discussed at the February 2007 Principals’ meeting.

9.  The winter 2006-07 schedules were updated.

10.  The spring 2007 schedules will be reviewed at the February 2007 meeting.

11. The meeting adjourned at 11:30 am.
