Principals' Minutes
May 1, 2002
1. The meeting started at 8:15 am, all schools were present except Clifton Central and Momence.
2. Mr. Gibson of Milford made a motion to accept the minutes of the April 3, 2002 meeting, Mr. Bogner of Gibson City Melvin Sibley seconded. The motion carried.
3. Mr. Bogner presented the Treasurers’ Report. The SVC has a balance of $10, 601.62 as of May 1. The SVC still has to pay $2500 in scholarships and a couple of bills for awards. Mr. Gibson made a motion to accept, seconded by Mr. Roberts of Watseka. The motion carried.
4. John Overstreet presented a recommendation from the Athletic Director concerning the Basketball All Star Game. Mr. Gibson made a motion to accept the recommendation, seconded by Mr. Mulvaney of Armstrong. The motion carried.
5. John Overstreet passed out certificates for the All-Academic team. LeRoy, Uni High and Watseka still need to send names for the team.
6. The 2002-03 calendar was presented. Mr. Mulvaney made a motion to accept the calendar, seconded by Mr. Hawkins of Iroquois West. The motion carried.
7. Names were proposed for the Bud Maynard award. Mr. Colba of Tri Valley made a motion to accept the nominee, seconded by Mr. Uphoff of Fisher. The motion carried. The award winner will be announced at the SVC Social in September.
8. A discussion was held on the need for a Principals' meeting in June. President Flaherty informed the Principals that a SIA meeting needs to be held still this year. Possible dates are: May 29th, June 3rd or June 5th. After some discussion, the Principals instructed Flaherty to schedule the SIA meeting for June 5th and the SVC would hold their regular meeting just prior to the SIA meeting. Times and locations will be decided on later.
9. The Principals agreed to recommend that the SIA golf outing in August not be held this year due to the complications of committing in May and playing in August.
10. John Overstreet updated the Principals on the SVC track meet. The seed meeting is Monday May 6th at 7 pm in Gibson City--all schools must attend and supply workers. The meet is on Tuesday May 7th at Gibson City Melvin Sibley High School's track. The meet starts at 2 pm with field events, 3 prelims and finals after. There will be a mandatory coaches meeting at 1:15 for scratches and to meet with the starters as required by the IHSA.
11. The following were elected officers for 2002-03: President Jim Flaherty of Paxton-Buckley-Loda, Vice President Mike Gibson of Milford and Treasurers Frank Bogner of Gibson City Melvin Sibley.
12. Mr. Runck of Blue Ridge informed the Principals that he had discussed the postings online concerning the all-star game and other items and was told not to post similar items in the future.
13. Mr. Flaherty informed the Principals that he had received a call from Dennis Moll, Superintendent at Tri Valley, concerning the status of the Midstate Conference. A discussion was held on what impact coops and consolidations in the Midstate and SVC could have on both conferences. It was recommended that a report be made showing what each school offered in the Midstate and SVC. It was agreed that this was very preliminary discussion.
14. Mr. Gibson expressed concern over how the IHSA Advisory Committees were making decisions, especially concerning the seeding of football into geographic regions and the recent decision concerning the Chicago Public League. It was agreed the SVC needs to inform the IHSA of the SVC concerns. A letter will be written to the IHSA.
15. Dr. Hedeman of Uni High informed the Principals that Uni High had not officially joined another conference but all indications were that it would make a final decision in the next month. Uni High would honor all SVC contracts for the 2002-03 school year and then leave the SVC in the 2003-04 school year.
16. Scholarship committees meet and selected the 2001-2002 winners.
