Automobile Physics

Just as your body has many systems, which work together to keep you healthy and active, an automobile has many interdependent systems which make it run. By choosing one of the following sites, you can learn about these systems. Using a search engine such as google, you can find other useful sites.  Using the google image search you can find pictures of car parts such as a radiator, and  go to the site to learn about the part. Image search is an efficient way to find informative sites.

As the systems of our body can be related to biology, the systems of a car can be related to physics. The contents page lists the topics studied in physics. Studying these topics helps us understand how the parts of a  car work and how to design better parts.

Do the following :

1.  From one of the above sites make a list of the major systems of an automobile and the major function of each system. Use the column tool to present this information in newspaper column format.

2a. Choose one system and find a diagram to copy to your Word document  Use the drawing toolbar. Draw arrows to the main parts of the system and label each part. (click here for cooling system diagram) or

See Cooling System Analysis   for a fun lesson.

or

2b. Choose one system and prepare a table presenting  its major components and the function of each.

3. Choose one component of that system and relate it to the physics principle that applies. Do this by writing a paragraph and doing a sample problem with equation that applies.

4. Use a digital camera to take a picture of this component in a automobile and include this in your report.

If you choose to do this exercise again you can skip Step 1.
