Interactive Physics Tutorial 2

Now let's learn to set the properties of the objects such as position, velocity,  type of material, mass, friction. elasticity, charge, and moment of inertia.

Open Interactive Physics. Open your Ball Bounce model. Find the Window tool in the tool toolbar. Left click on Window, Properties. The Properties Window is open, but no properties are showing, because you have not selected an object. Left click on the ball, and the properties of the ball are shown.

1.  X,Y Position

    Set the x position = 0, y position = 5

2. X,Y, Angle Velocity

    Set Vx = 3, Vy = 0

3. Mass

    Set mass = 4

The friction should equal 0 and elasticity equal 1, because you set already them . Ignore charge and moment for now. Close the Properties Window, so you can see the entire screen.

Run. Notice how the ball moves now. Stop. Reset.

Click on the ball. Notice it has an arrow pointing right. This represents velocity vector. Another way to open the Properties Window is to double click on the ball. Try it .

Change the Mass. Close the Properties Window.  Run. Is the motion different? Stop. Reset

Open the Properties Window.  Change the Vx or Vy. Close the Properties Window.  Run. Is the motion different? Stop. Reset

Open the Properties Window.  Change the V angle. Close the Properties Window.  Run. Is the motion different? Stop. Reset

Which of these changes made the motion different?

Open the Properties Window.  Change the X position. Close the Properties Window.  Run. What changes?  Stop. Reset

Another way to move an object is to Click and Drag., but do not click on the center of the ball. Try this.

Click on the ball. Open the Properties Window. Notice the ball's properties are shown. Move the ball right and notice the X position changes. Change the Vx to 0 in Properties Window. Click on Ball and notice the arrow is gone. Notice the center of the ball is shown. Place your mouse directly on the center and drag right about 1". You should see a velocity arrow.

Now you know 2 ways to move and object and give it a velocity.
