April SOM

Sophia Naylor of Loda has been named student of the month for April at Paxton-
Buckley-Loda High School. Sophia is the daughter of Miralene Naylor. She was
nominated for the award by her Family and Consumer Science teacher, Sally Ellis.
Mrs. Ellis said in her nomination, “I am happy to nominate Sophia Naylor as student of
the month. It has been a pleasure to get to know Sophia through Family and Consumer
Science classes over the last few years. Sophia is extremely soft spoken; however, she
has allowed me a glimpse of her personality and passion through her creativity in
projects. Sophia has a unique vision, and is able to use calligraphy, painting, sculpture,
and props to bring her projects to life.”
Mrs. Ellis also stated, “At the beginning of this school year, Sophia decided that she
wanted to try out some new things. So, she wrote an essay explaining why she thought
she would be the best person to fill a Family Career & Community Leaders of America
officer position. That essay was the start of her reign as president of FCCLA. She
quickly found her footing as a leader and along with the other officers, attended two
FCCLA leadership conferences mapping out the year’s activities, public outreach, and
fundraising. She has contributed to each FCCLA event including sock-tober, cold
weather clothing drive, cookies & cards for veterans, and the upcoming frugal fashion
show.”
Sophia participates in FCCLA and is president of the organization. Sophia has
volunteered several ways through FCCLA. Sophia’s post-secondary plans are to attend
Parkland College and major in business.
The student of the month award is sponsored by Farmers-Merchants Bank of Illinois.
The award recognizes PBL High School students who demonstrate the school district’s
mission of “Excellence through rigor, relevance, and relationships.” Teachers nominate
students and the winner receives $50, and the other nominees receive a $5 gift
certificate from Just Hamburgers. The other students that were nominated for April
Student of the Month are Corey Quick, Landon Ritter, Johnny Rodeen, Charley Ulrich,
and Kyleigh Williams. Congratulations to all the nominees and our winner, Sophia
Naylor!
