Theresa Domingo Gumecindo of Paxton has been named student of the month for
March at Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School. Theresa Is the daughter of Martin Olivares
and Vanessa Gumecindo. She was nominated for the award by English teacher, Vicky
St. Peter.
Mrs. St Peter said in her nomination, “Theresa had an extremely rough start at the
beginning of this semester. She missed the first three weeks due to personal reasons
and her grades dropped. When she came back to school, Theresa was extremely
worried about her grades. She worked diligently to get her grades up, and as of today,
she has all A’s and B’s with the one exception being Consumer Education. Theresa is
currently working hard to raise that grade.”
Mrs. St Peter also stated, “Theresa is also a rather shy girl, but I am really proud of her.
She has reached out to teachers that she is not extremely comfortable with when she
has needed help. Theresa would not have done that three months ago.”
Mrs. St. Peter added, “I also know Theresa is proud of herself. When she gets a good
grade, she comes into my room to tell me. Recently, Theresa got a B+ on an extremely
difficult English project, and she was thrilled! It was so obvious she was proud of
herself from the beaming smile she wore the entire day. Her work ethic is paying off
and I have really seen her grow this semester. At this point, I feel like she is starting to
realize what her priorities should be, and for that, I am grateful.”
Theresa has participated in student council, choir, soccer, softball, and the musical. She
has also been on the honor roll. Theresa has volunteered at the homeless shelter and
distributed food to others in need. Theresa plans on attending Parkland and becoming
a CNA.
The student of the month award is sponsored by the Bank of Pontiac. The award
recognizes PBL High School students who demonstrate the school district’s mission of
“Excellence through rigor, relevance, and relationships.” Teachers nominate students
and the winner receives $50, and the other nominees receive a $5 gift certificate from
Just Hamburgers. The other students nominated for March Student of the Month were
Maddison DeOrnellas, Cooper Gattung, Karley Putnam, and Kayden Vance.
Congratulations to all the nominees and our winner, Theresa Domingo!
