Mrs. Sawyer and the 5th-8th grade Enrichment classes took a field trip to Heartland Community College's Challenger Learning Center. The students began their morning with a STEM training exercise.  Using lasers, mirrors, and light sensors, students had to locate unknown objects in space, measure their bio identity markers, or “fingerprints”, and determine what the object was.

They boarded Athena and flew to the International Space Station.

Every crew member had a job and they all worked simultaneously while communicating with Mission Control through computers, headphones, and microphones.

What a great day at the Challenger Learning Center! These students had to problem-solve, research, communicate, and think critically to complete a successful mission. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t perfect, but the journey was one I doubt they will forget.
