engineering

The future of innovation was on full display as gifted enrichment students led by Mrs. Sawyer from Clara Peterson Elementary School and PBL Junior High School traveled to the University of Illinois for its annual Engineering Open House. The trip offered students a hands-on deep dive into the world of STEM. From the moment they arrived on campus, the young scholars were immersed in a high-energy environment where "learning by doing" was the gold standard.

Hands-On Innovation

The festival floor was a playground of high-tech exploration. Students didn't just observe; they rolled up their sleeves and dove into several specialized workshops:

Circuits & Hardware: Students practiced precision by soldering LED circuits, learning the fundamentals of electrical engineering and connectivity.

Coding & AI: In the digital realm, students spent time coding and interacting with AI Robotics, witnessing firsthand how machine learning is shaping the future of automation.

Biomedical Breakthroughs: A crowd favorite involved interacting with new medical technologies, allowing students to see how engineering can directly save lives and improve human health.

Inspiring the Next Generation

For the PBL gifted program, trips like these are essential for connecting classroom concepts to real-world careers. By engaging with collegiate mentors and professional-grade equipment, students left the University of Illinois not just with soldered gadgets and souvenir stickers, but with a clearer vision of their own potential.

"I love this day, because I want to be an engineer and today is making me smarter!" shared one enthusiastic third grader with Mrs. Sawyer, echoing the sentiment of the entire group.
