Mr. VanNote, Officer Ryan, and Mr. Jones came into the 3rd grade classrooms this week to speak about how they help people with their jobs. 3rd graders then worked on writing about someone they knew that helped people that they consider a hero.

Our fifth graders were fortunate to hear from guest speaker Margurette Carter yesterday. A respected educator, mentor, and active Rantoul community member, Mrs. Carter shared her life experiences. Thank you, Mrs. Carter, for inspiring our students!

5Essentials Parent Survey: We would like to invite you to provide feedback to assist us in driving our school improvement efforts. The survey is called the 5Essentials Survey, which will help schools and districts identify areas of strength and those in need of support. There is an optional parent survey that goes along with the teacher and student survey. PBL schools will get a report from the parent survey if the school achieves a 20% response rate. We are asking that you please take a few minutes to complete the survey. The survey is located at: http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/

The Ford County Attendance Initiative would like to give some tips to help students get to school as much as possible and limit our chronic absenteeism! Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before school. Establish a bedtime and morning routine. Plan trips and appointments outside of school hours if possible. Minimize screen time before bedtime to help achieve restful sleep. Ask school staff to help if your child is having anxiety about school. Have a back up plan to get to school if something comes up. Let's work together to help better student attendance at our schools. Be Present, Be Powerful!

This week was National School Counseling Week, which highlights the unique contributions of school counselors across the country. They help students achieve school success and plan for the future. Showing up for school every day is a big part of how well your child does, both in learning and in life overall. And to help them really shine, taking care of their health is key! This means eating right, getting enough sleep, staying active, and keeping clean – it all matters.

Mrs. Steiner and Mrs. Johnson's second grade classes had an opportunity to have a speaker from the St. Louis Dairy Council visit the classroom. This year both classes have adopted a calf from dairy farms from the St. Louis Dairy Council. This program provide monthy updates on the adopted calf and photos to show how much the calf has grown. Ms Monica joined our classroom and shared information on what cows eat, where they sleep, how often the cow gives milk, and what happens to the milk once it is milked from the cow. We also learned about the health benefits of milk. The classes did a wonderful job listening and representing PBL!

As we enter the winter months, be prepared for inclement weather and do your best to stay healthy. Attendance is still very important at this time of year!

We just wrapped up our science chapter on erosion and Earth's surfaces. We completed several experiments where we created models to test examples of structures of buildings and how land can be eroded. One experiment tested types of soil. Another experiment tested structures and how to make them more sturdy. And the last 2 lessons, we learned about how water can create canyons and landslides. We used a mixture of cornmeal, salt, and water to represent land and then we tested ways to avoid erosion. It was a great hands on experience and the class really enjoyed learning about real life problems and how they are solved.
